Food Supplements and its Nutritional Functions

This article tells of the nature of most food supplements, their common origins and nature, and its functions to the body.
There are many types of food supplements made available in the market today. Very commonly we have those food supplements that come from herbs. There are over one thousand herbs that are considered and found to be sources of food supplements.

Many types of these herbs actually have been used in the ancient Chinese, Native American or other healing traditions. Herbs have been used for ages for its healing and nourishment properties to the body. However, there are some problems related with the use of some herbs. Some of them may be toxic. An example of such are aluminum-containing herbs include peppermint, spearmint and wintergreen herbs. It has been found that although they may be helpful in settling an upset stomach, they are no longer helpful when used in long terms. It has been found that the use of these herbs on a daily basis is not wise due to the aluminum content. This is just one of many examples of herbs that contain either toxic metal when consumed in excess.

Another problem related with the use of herbs in making food supplements involve the food additive quality. This quality has been found to vary tremendously in many cases. It has been found that this problem is getting worse. It is suggested that is intelligent for the buying public to know the source of herbs and to beware anyone selling them too inexpensively since more people want to use herbs for food supplements and other functions, and there are fewer places to grow them that are without of chemicals and other soil contaminants.

Also, since the quality varies, it also follows that the dosing of herbs can be difficult. This could affect the potency of the drug or food supplements made out of these herbs. Because of such, one does not always know how much to take. If the herb is very potent, much less is needed. Too much of which can lead to overdoses. If they are not potent enough, then desired heath results too can not be achieved. It is also a concern that the combinations of herbs can be even more toxic or may not mix well in other ways. It has been found that many of the herbal combinations can even counter each other or affect one another in harmful ways.

Homeopathic remedies are another common group of food supplements. They refer to very dilute compounds of minerals and other chemicals. They are believed to have effects on the body and are believed to be generally much safer than pharmaceutical medicines.
Vitamins and minerals comprise a very large group of supplements. Some of them are naturally derived from plants, just like vitamin E that comes from wheat germ oil. Others are semi-synthetic by nature. They include vitamin C that is made from corn palm.

There are several reasons why it is believed that people should take food supplements. Primarily, food supplements help nurture and nourish the body of a person. Even in ancient times many people have used special foods, like the extracts from plants and fruits as well as herbs to nourish the body. It is believed that they not only provide nutrients, but even other kinds of subtle energies to our bodies. Today, more than ever our bodies are commonly deficient in the electrolytes; taking supplements literally supplement our dietary needs.

Also, as toxic metals and other chemicals are all around us in our environment, food supplements can also aid us in reducing the harmful effects of some of these environmental toxins. Food supplements act by enhancing our body?s ability to eliminate poisons we get from our environment.
Likewise, some supplements can help those with some special needs. It has been found that many people require far greater amounts of some nutrients than others, like the lactating mother for example, or the pregnant woman. In such cases and many others, food supplements can provide added nutrition.
Nutritional supplements also help healing people?s illnesses. Intakes of food supplements have been found to help heal common illnesses and even serious ones like cancer.
